I found this hack which might be worth a try if you don’t like the point source most LEDs have and lack a condenser lens…

Brilliant. Thanks for this. We need to update the doc to be clear on this. Sanding them works well. I have also found that stretching PTFE tape (plumbing tape) over the LED diffuses it quite well too.
